N3 Toll Tariffs
The N3, which stretches from Johannesburg to Durban, via Harrismith and Pietermaritzburg, is one of the most popular (and busiest) roads during the holiday period. Here are the toll tariffs you will have to pay (if travelling in an ordinary light passenger vehicle) on the road this festive season.De Hoek Plaza - R24
Wilge Plaza - R33
Tugela Plaza - R35
Mooi Plaza - R25
Marionhill Plaza - R6
Total: R123 (one way)
R246 (return)
Heavy vehicles (with five or more axles) can expect to pay a total of R453 each way (R906 return) to travel on the same toll roads.
If you are travelling on a different route, or leaving the N3 earlier, go to www.n3tc.co.za and use the toll fees calculator to find out what you will pay in toll tariffs on your journey. You can also use this site to check weather and road conditions, as well as road works in progress on the N3.
What toll fees are used for
Tolls collected are used to finance the building, upgrading, maintenance and operation of the portion of the N3 managed as per the Concession Contract between N3TC and SANRAL.N3TC receives no other income/subsidy from Government whatsoever. In addition to using the tolls collected to ensure a high quality road, improved road safety, reduced travelling distances and substantial savings on the running costs of vehicles, N3TC also spends a percentage of the income on corporate social responsibility projects.

Very useful information for anyone deciding to do this trip. It is these hidden costs that the general public does not normally take into account when planning a trip.
