If I had to draw up my own list for a car of the year competition, they would all be ‘fast’ cars and, believe me, the Opel Astra OPC would certainly be in one of the top positions.

Opel Astra OPC is a winne

Price: R270 390

The Opel Astra OPC is a winner, not just for its torque from the turbo-charged engine, but also for it’s looks.

I must say, if there was one thing that attracted attention to my test vehicle, it was the imposing 18-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels and its 17-inch disc brakes and their OPC blue callipers, visible behind the wheel spokes. I simply said that this gave one insight into the massive braking power available.

Sporty interior styling

The interior styling, with its Recaro seats in a combination of leather and fabric covering conveys the same sporty message.  Full instrumentation with chrome surrounds and LED illumination kept me fully informed. Aluminium pedals and door sill trims, a three-spoke leather covered sport steering wheel and leather covered gear knob round off the sporty interior.

If you’re interested… loads of torque

At just 2400rpm and at maximum boost of 1,2 bar, the Astra OPC  produces 320Nm of torque and sustains this level right up to 5000rpm. Maximum power of 177kW is achieved at 5600rpm.

I am not too familiar with all the technical stuff, but according to the experts the electro hydraulic power steering features a setup specific to the Astra OPC to ensure the best possible feedback and precise steering inputs.

Also, the Astra Interactive Driving System (IDSPlus) chassis concept is further optimised for the OPC version for improved control. The IDSPlus links all the electronic driver aid systems, including the Electronic Stability Programme, Traction Control, Understeer Logic Control, ABS and the Brake Assist in a dynamic network. The list of all the features is endless – there is even a ‘SportSwitch’ to provide more direct steering and throttle inputs.

Great combination of luxury and safety

A full complement of creature comforts, luxury and safety features are included in the standard equipment list – from a radio/CD combination with MP3 compatibility to adjustable and heated side mirrors, adjustable steering column, dual front airbags and curtain airbags.

The Astra OPC was an exciting vehicle to test drive and I know I was the envy of many a youngster who stopped next to me at traffic lights!
The 2-litre Astra OPC’s recommended retail price is R270 390.
