Peta Lee gives the Honda CR-V a REAL road test on a drive from Durban to Swakopmund and back...
Don’t tell a soul, girls, but it took us 5000km to realise the button we were pressing on the dashboard wasn’t for fog-lights: it was for the headlight washers! Oh well, on a trip this long a small blonde moment like that can be excused.
The two day journey there and back was pretty hectic, but thanks to the amazing, incredibly comfortable, quiet, smooth and absolutely perfect Honda CR-V 2.4 (six-speed) we’d been loaned, it was more of a breeze than it might have been.
The two little girls flipped down the back seat and spread out sleeping bags and slept for hours. Honda had supplied a lockable stowage box fitted to the roof racks, which took all the big bags and unwieldy stuff, so in the SUV itself, we had cameras, an overnight bag, padkos and cameras. And, of course, the kids had their portable CD player, books, crayons, playing cards etc.
Gassing it on those wonderful roads (no speed traps, and barely any traffic at all), was irresistible. Set the cruise control at 160 and go for it. At times I’d just disengage the speedocruise and throw caution to the wind, revelling in the smoothness and exceptional performance of the Honda.
Ultra quiet, with an incredibly sexy sounding engine, sunroof, and just plain brilliant roadholding, the SUV was outstanding.
Louise and I both also enjoyed the gearlever on the base of the central console and the classy interior lights, and the kids loved the huge boot and being able to drop just one of the rear seats if they felt like stretching out between the boot and the back seat.
Yes, I’d buy one tomorrow if I could.

The new Honda CR-V goes on a real road trip
My mate and I (Thelma and Louise) and two children (we liked the sound of the Travelled Wildcherries) had embarked on a 5000km road trip from Durbs to Swakopmund in Namibia and back. All in all, we were away for about 11 days, and spent a portion of every single one in the car.A smooth, comfortable, quiet... and perfect ride
![]() Honda's clearly the brand of choice in Namibia - at Dune 7 at Swakopmund, we
spotted a much used Honda flag plus another CR-V parked outside the
dune-adventure centre. Our fab vehicle is on the right! ![]() Peta and the kids with the Honda in Swakopmund

Tons of room for everyone
Driving 1200km a day is best described as long. But thanks to the amazing behaviour and performance of the marvellously good-looking CR-V, super comfy leather seats, and the excellent sound system, the hours flew by.Gassing it on those wonderful roads (no speed traps, and barely any traffic at all), was irresistible. Honda CR-V features automatic four-wheel drive
With every gizmo possible (except a distance to empty indicator – or if there was one I never found it!), driver’s armrest and footrest, multiple airbags, automatic four-wheel-drive when you need it (the CR-V is front wheel drive but when the Real Time 4WD system detects front wheel slippage, drive torque is quickly transferred to the read wheels as well – the four-wheel-drive is activated automatically without any driver intervention), it was the perfect long-distance vehicle.Ultra quiet, with an incredibly sexy sounding engine, sunroof, and just plain brilliant roadholding, the SUV was outstanding.

I also own a CRV and am just as satisfied with it. Where can I purchase a roof box like the one used in your road test?
